A student of advertising…

My first blog post…

When I was a kid I lived in Germany. And bear in mind this was aaaaaages ago there was no such thing as cable TV, so all we got was MacGyver. In German. For years and years.

But thankfully I was very close to my mom’s father, my Poppa, and he recorded all of the latest TV shows in the UK on trusty VHS E-180 tapes and sent them over to Munich for us. Or at least he tried.

What we never told him was that, despite his best efforts to programme the video recorder or press the ‘Record’ button manually, all he ever managed to capture was the adverts. God bless him…

Me and My Poppa

And so at the age of 8, in the absence of absolutely anything else to watch in English on TV, I just used to watch tape after tape of commercial breaks. And that my friends, is perhaps the point at which I became ‘a student of advertising’.

Since then I’ve always been interested in ads and advertising, branding, media, promotions, packaging…you name it, I talked about it, bored people about it, and even had a weekly little game with the team at TBWAManchester called ‘Comms Highlight’ where I got everyone to share the bet bit of comms they’d seen from the previous week. What a tedious boss I must have been.

So now, via the power of the internet, and in honour of my Poppa, I’m going to share my thoughts on the bits of creative I see in my day-to-day life. If nothing else it will give me something to do with the 4-5 photos of such items I take during the average day and save in my ‘Favourites’ folder on my phone. Yes, I am that sad. And rest assured I fully expect you to all unsubscribe within the first three days, but don’t worry, I won’t be offended…

Hope you’re all well, and look forward to catching up soon!!!
